Voice is more than hitting the notes…
I teach singers to develop a voice that is healthy, expressive, flexible, and unmistakably their own. Whether you're a complete beginner, a serious amateur, a young singer preparing for an audition, or an experienced performer looking to break through a technical roadblock, we'll work from the same basic principle: good technique always makes music feel more natural, never more complicated.
My approach combines classical vocal training with practical musicianship, performance experience, and a deep interest in how different musical traditions understand the voice. We'll work on the mechanics of singing, but also on interpretation, language, musicality, confidence, and the particular qualities that make your voice worth hearing.
I teach voice and speech, and also offer beginning piano, music theory, songwriting, and other musical coaching. I don’t want my students to sound like me. Instead, I will give you more freedom to sound like yourself.

Dr. Birchell is a voice teacher and speech coach, and can also give lessons in beginning piano, music theory, songwriting, or ukulele. For classical singers, he can help with not only technique but also language & interpretation. Online (Zoom), or in person in Seattle (Greenwood area).
Dr. Birchell holds a Master of Music concentrating in voice and opera from UCLA’s Herb Alpert School of Music, and a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Washington. He is an experienced educator, having taught students of all ages. Dr. Birchell is a member of NATS, the National Association of Teachers of Singing. Contact him!
